Iraq's Government Forming and Struggles for Peace
The Iraqi Government within this past year had largely peaceful elections in October, however efforts to continue the election have been stalling. For the Presidential seat in Iraq there has been a struggle due to the parliamentary quorum not being met in the designated time period. The dilemma is the president, once elected, designates the prime minister to form a council of members which is endorsed by parliament. With this new revisionist power system in Iraq not being sorted out, a security dilemma begins to unfold in Iraq’s national security because of terrorist groups such as the Da’esh. The national security of Iraq is at risk because of these organizations, but the representative of Iraq assured the United Nations security council that this would not disturb the strive for better peace in Iraq.
With claims that peace will still be attained, Iraq has looked to its multi-polar system of the United Nations and has asked for greater efforts to address these threats. Although Iraq has obtained greater human security through means of allowing women to vote in the past election, problems still have arisen. In talking about national security however, some of the United Nations delegates have urged cooperation between the Iraqi government and the Kurdish republic government in order to deal with the Da’esh that have wreaked havoc on the nation. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, Special Representative of the Secretary-General and head of UNAMI made it clear that a decision must be made soon to ensure the people are heard. If the people are not heard in Iraq and lack of progress on domestic reforms will be a profit for the Da’esh because of the instability of the country’s national security.
For Hennis-Plasschaert she believes this is where the multi-polar system should come in and help without the means of power grabbing. Many countries in the United Nations have given ideas of what should be done, but few have offered help in the way that would preserve the sovereignty of Iraq. With Iraq using a revisionist power to obtain a more democratic state has been a challenge thus far with little cooperation among terrorist groups and the Kurdich Republic government they have fallen short. Iraq cannot move forward without the help from other nations and even once a president is in power it is not guaranteed that their sovereignty will remain the way it is now. Iraq is dealing with a lot of domestic problems besides the terrorism that hurts their national security and without a president or help from other nations that do not respect their sovereignty, the new revisonist power that is being attempted will not be able to succeed.
