Blog Post #4 on Climate Change

Is climate change as serious as many say or is it just a way for media or politicians to downplay?

For about 20 years climate change has continued to grow as one of the most major problems around the world. The emissions of greenhouse gases has caused Earth's temperature to rise at a steady pace. A major concern when talking about climate change is its legitimacy. Of course climate change is legitimate, but in recent years there has been much hype to whether climate change is actually occurring or not. Scientists have understood the reasoning behind the consistent rising of the Earth's temperature, which is carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that cause the warming.

Climate change has been a tough challenge to navigate for many countries around the world because it can be treated so many different ways. From the year 1998 the Kyoto Protocol has been implemented to try eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. The major concern that brought the Kyoto Protocol into fruition would be the greenhouse gas emissions that have been being pumped into our Earth's atmosphere since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Over time data was collected by scientists and they figured out that Earth's temperature has rose 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. Scientists are able to confirm climate change because of the consistent ice and glaciers melting, ocean levels are rising, animals are looking for cooler places in higher elevation, and some natural disasters have only continued to get worse. Around 90 percent of the world's scientist study climate of our planet and a high majority of them agree that the Earth is heating. Climate change has been a known fact in part of our planet for nearly three decades, so where and how is there even a debate on the matter?

The debate of climate change is one that might not entirely make sense with all the evidence that stacks up against the claim that climate change is a real global issue. Most of the people that challenged the idea that climate change is real were politicians and companies that opposed of taking action in combating climate change. These people realized that there would be consequences for the actions that dealt with politicians and companies that polluted so much of our atmosphere with the greenhouse gasses. The people of the U.S. even went as far as signing a petition in support of not joining the Kyoto Protocol. Many of these people believed that climate change was simply not happening whether they had ties to fossil fuel businesses or companies that opposed climate change.

Climate change is happening around our globe right now and all the damage that we have done is not irreversible, but we continue to try and find new ways to protect the environment. Through the means of scientific data collected over about a century we can understand that Earth temperature is rising and it is not just a social media or media scam. The politicians and companies are trying to downplay climate change as an important issue, but with the evidence collected over the last 150 years or so we are able to see through specific examples that we need to make valued efforts to counter the climate change issue.

  1. Solid post! What would you recommend bringing to the attention of someone who doubts climate change? Do you see anyone in our modern culture as being the primary culprit for disseminating climate change misinformation?

  2. I really like your blog post. I agree that climate change is scientifically proven and there really should be no debate on its validity. It is clear that dealing with climate change means spending more money and working harder on tasks, which is why there is so much push back. There is a heavy focus on money in our society which is one of the big reasons why there have not been enough changes being made to combat climate change.

  3. Great post, and I agree with you. I think as climate change becomes a larger part of the popular discourse around the country and our world we will see more companies do more about fixing the issue. I think that is already the case in many ways, as a vast number of companies have vowed to become carbon neutral, or at least reduce their carbon footprint, because today a company that does nothing to protect the environment will most likely see push back and a ultimately fall in reputation.
