 Support for the ICC

The International Criminal Court is a large organization that works toward taking down powerful people who have performed crimes against humanity. There are many countries involved in this court with the goal of prosecuting individuals for genocide, war crimes when national jurisdictions for any reason are unable and unwilling to do so. The United States should become a part of this organization because of the significance of punishing people for unacceptable acts.

This international court works to hold powerful people accountable for crimes against humanity.  The authority the United States holds could boost the courts status and give them a better ability to arrest dominant individuals. One main criticism of the court is the pace at which it is prosecuting people. The involvement of an influential country like the U.S could help progress the court to achieve more convictions. As well, the message the court is sending by trying to bring international justice is another prominent reason why the United States should become a part of the ICC. “promoted the principle that no one should be immune from prosecution for genocide and crimes against humanity”(deGuzman). This court sends a strong and important message that the world condemns acts such as child soilders and crimes of sexual violence. This is an important justice that the United States supports and should want to show it through backing the ICC. It could possibly prevent some of these human rights violations from occuring in the world. The US represents freedom and liberty and should stand with other countries trying to punish international injustices. Our country is a main player in international politics and it would make the most sense for it to support the ICC.

  1. This is an interesting piece, and I understand your arguments for why it is a good idea to join the international court of justice. One thing is that the ICC does not have the same due process in which we largely value in the United States. So if the US were to join would it make sense to change the court and its process, or would the US be part of a system of a flawed justice system using our own definition.

  2. You do a good job of communicating early and often exactly what your argument is. Considering the fact that the ICC has existed for some time now without the US's participation and has been relatively impotent particularly in regards to developed states, I am afraid of what appearances would be if the US did join the ICC and made it more capable. Do you think it is possible that if the US joined the ICC and it was suddenly significantly more effective that the world would struggle to distinguish between the objective ICC and US (semi-imperialistic) power? Could they become synonymous?

  3. Very interesting take on why the U.S. should join the ICC. I think one thing to take into account though is that while we very often try to attribute the United States with liberty and justice for all, to what extent do you think that is true? Especially with the U.S. engaging in forms of neo-colonialism, how can the U.S. be part of an organization when they commit such acts to its own people and in other countries? Do you think there needs to be a sense of accountability if the U.S. joins the ICC?

  4. This post is interesting to me because I have never known about the International Criminal Court being an organization. With the information that you provided from your blog post I agree with the idea that the US should get involved with this organization. The idea of the US joining would be a good opportunity as you said to hold people accountable for crimes against humanity, and with the power and resources that the US holds along with the influence they would have on the organization would only make the ICC stronger.

  5. This was very interesting because similar to Nick I didn't know the International Criminal Court was even an organization. I also think the US joining would be a good opportunity because this will help the world stay at peace more because the US is seen as a powerful country with lots of resources. This may even help the US in the long run by creating allies through this organization.
